Terror odradza się w zdumiewającym podsumowaniu sagi Obcy! Od momentu, w którym Ripley poświęciła swoje życie, by uratować ludzkość na Fiorinie 161 minęło 200 lat. Grupa naukowców dokonuje wstrząsającego eksperymentu. Wykorzystując próbkę krwi, klonują Ripley... a wraz z nią zarodek Obcego, którego nosiła w sobie. Naukowcy chcą w ten sposób stworzyć najbardziej skuteczną broń na świecie.
Proszono Angelinę Jolie o zagranie roli Call.
Dr Wrena miał zagrać Bill Murray.
Pierwszymi kandydatami na reżysera byli Danny Boyle oraz David Cronenberg. Paul W.S. Anderson był również brany pod uwagę, ale z powodu konfliktu harmonogramu musiał odrzucić propozycję.
Ripley rozpuszcza swą krwią szybę w ostatniej scenie. Następnie łapie się pasków, które powinny się rozpuścić, bo Ellen rozcięła sobie rękę.
Doktor Gediman i Ripley odnosząc się do planety, na której pierwotnie zmarła Ripley, nazywają ją "Fury 16". Jednak planeta o której rozmawiają, w rzeczywistości nazywała się "Fury 161".
Plama krwi Ripley, która upadła na podłogę najpierw zmienia kształt i położenie, a potem całkiem znika.
Kiedy Ripley wchodzi do laboratorium, gdzie przechowywane są mutanty za nią widać Clemensa, który wcześniej uciekł i nie powinno go tam być.
Cyfra 8 na ręce Ripley "ginie" w niektórych scenach.
W gnieździe, kiedy naukowiec wypowiada słowa "Na początku wszystko było normalne...", wyraźnie widać, że ruchy warg nie pasują do wypowiadanej kwestii.
Kiedy noworodek dotyka twarzy Ripley, krew na jego dłoniach znika między ujęciami.
Kiedy Ripley przechodzi operację, Gediman rozcina jej klatkę piersiową poniżej piersi. Później, kiedy Wren sprawdza jej blizny, te znajdują się znacznie wyżej, pomiędzy piersiami.
Podczas walki na siłowni, Ripley uderza Christie piłką do koszykówki, powalając go na ziemię. Ten podczas upadku, nie ma już w ręce sztangi, chociaż nie było słychać odgłosu uderzenia o podłogę.
Podczas strzału tuż przed sceną z klonem w laboratorium, przed kamerą przechodzi dziewięć osób, jednakże na tym etapie filmu zostało już tylko ośmiu członków załogi.
Kiedy Virness zwisa z Christie na drabinie, widać trzymającą go uprząż na jego plecach.
Zdjęcia do filmu kręcono w Long Beach i Los Angeles (Kalifornia, USA) oraz w Ottawie i Winnipeg (Kanada).
Ze względu na zbyt duże koszty, nie nakręcono sceny w sztucznym ogrodzie, gdzie Ripley miała uciekać Jeepem przed chmarą Obcych.
Ron Perlman prawie utonął podczas kręcenia podwodnej sceny. Gdy się wynurzał, uderzył głową w pokrywę i zemdlał. Reanimowała go ekipa filmowa.
Pierwotnie czwarta część filmu miała być bazowana na fabule komiksu "Alien vs. Predator".
Początkowo w scenariuszu było napisane, że Ripley budzi się i zdaje sobie sprawę, że wszystkie wydarzenia z "Alien 3" były tylko jej snem.
Jean-Pierre Jeunet chciał nakręcić scenę, w której komar kłuje Ripley i zostaje spalony przez jej kwaśną krew. Porzucił ten pomysł, gdy dowiedział się, ile taka scena będzie kosztować.
Sigourney Weaver dostała za ten film więcej pieniędzy, niż wynosił cały budżet pierwszej części.
Winona Ryder zgodziła się zagrać w filmie bez czytania scenariusza. Mogła zginąć już w pierwszej minucie - prawie utonęła podczas kręcenia podwodnej sceny.
Jean-Pierre Jeunet nie umiał mówić po angielsku podczas kręcenia filmu, więc posiadał wielu osobistych tłumaczy.
Inspiracją projektu "Betty" była dla Nigela Phelpsa wiertarka udarowa. "Auriga" oryginalnie miała zaś mieć konstrukcję pionową. Phelps zarzucił jednak ten pomysł gdy zdał sobie sprawę jak trudno będzie uchwycić taką konstrukcję w filmie.
Joss Whedon stworzył 5 różnych wersji finałowej walki z nowym obcym. Pierwsze 4 miały miejsce na Ziemi: w szpitalu, na olbrzymim złomowisku, w lesie zimą i na pustyni.
W kinowej wersji filmu zabrakło w czołówce H.R. Gigera, który był pomysłodawcą wyglądu pierwotnego obcego. Oburzony artysta wysłał w tej sprawie list protestacyjny do FOX-a co zaowocowało umieszczeniem jego nazwiska w końcowych napisach filmu wydanego na kasetach.
Wstępne koncepcje dotyczące wyglądu statku Auriga, bazowały na koncepcji, że ma on przypominać wielki krzyż, zawieszony w kosmosie. Reżyser jednak odrzucił projekt, ze względu na złą prezentacje pionowej konstrukcji statku w ujęciach panoramicznych.
Wszystkie korytarze w filmie to tylko dwie rozbudowane dekoracje, które w różnych scenach inaczej oświetlano i stosowano inne ujęcia i kadrowanie.
Scena zabicia postaci przez rykoszet wystrzelonego pocisku miała zostać wykorzystana przez Jeuneta przy pracach nad "Miastem zaginionych dzieci". Okazja do takiego epizodu trafiła się dopiero na planie "Obcy: Przebudzenie".
Generał Perez początkowo miał zostać wyssany w przestrzeń kosmiczną jak obcy w pierwszej i drugiej części.
Na potrzeby scen w zatopionej kuchni zdecydowano się na przerobienie jednej z hal w studio do zdjęć podwodnych. Podłogę studia pogłębiono o 4 metry, zaś cały basen miał wymiary 30 x 15 metrów. Jego napełnianie trwało niemal tydzień. Realizacja wszystkich ujęć w zatopionej kuchni trwała ponad trzy tygodnie. Była poprzedzona kilkunastoma próbami na sucho i dwoma tygodniami prób w basenie.
W scenach podwodnych rozpuszczono mleko w wodzie by nadać środowisku lepszy efekt jasności.
Zdjęcia do filmu były realizowane w okresie od 19 listopada 1996 r. do 24 kwietnia 1997 r.
Statek Auriga był plastikowym modelem zbudowanym w skali 1:100. Miał 3,5 metra długości.
W pierwszych scenach pokazujących Ripley dojrzewającą wąskiej, stojącej retorcie użyto dwa manekiny. Modele przygotowała ekipa Woodruffa i Gillisa, na podstawie zdjęć młodej Sigourney Weaver (młodsza wersja), oraz odlewu jej ciała, wykonanego podczas pracy nad "Obcym 3".
Ostrze noża przebijające wierzch dłoni Ripley powstało w całości dzięki cyfrowej animacji firmy VIFX. Wiarygodności dopełniła cyfrowa krew na ostrzu, niewielki dym ze zżeranego krwią Ripley metalu, oraz oczywiście animacja przebijanej skóry dłoni.
W podwodnej scenie ciągnięcia Kim Flowers przez obcego do tyłu, tak naprawdę aktorkę ciągnęła linka, przyczepiona do jej nogi.
Granaty, malowniczo wystrzeliwane z wody i pod wodą, były dziełem animacji komputerowej. Z kolei podwodna eksplozja obcego została nakręcona na żywo - wybuchający obcy był modelem z wosku.
"Ruchoma rzeźba" jak nazwano gigantyczny zbiór obcych macek, na wierzchu których nieprzytomnie wiła się Ripley, to ustawiona nad ziemią platforma o rozmiarach 6 x 12 metrów. Pod spodem zastęp lalkarzy pracowicie poruszał wykonaną z pianki całością, na którą wylano aż 200 litrów filmowego śluzu.
W pracach nad filmem wykorzystano aż 2000 litrów sztucznego śluzu. Pobito rekord ustanowiony przez "Obcego 3".
Model królowej obcych zaprojektowanej przez Stana Winstona pojawił się już w drugiej części. Wypożyczono go od kolekcjonera Boba Burnsa, ale na planie wykorzystano tylko górną część modelu. Resztę zbudowano od zera.
Przy niezwykle spektakularnej scenie porodu hybrydy człowieka z xenomorphem pracowało aż 30 lalkarzy, po 15 na każdą postać (hybrydę i królową obcych).
Ścianę z dokiem na Auridze zbudowano jako ogromną, 5,5-metrową miniaturę. Była dwa razy większa, niż sam model statku.
Statek Betty zbudowano w skali 1:32. Jej wygląd miał, wg słów Matthew Gratznera, przypominać bombowca z II wojny światowej, wyrzuconego w kosmos.
Obcy-albinos, nazwany przez twórców po prostu Newbornem, był zaawansowanym animatronicznie modelem o wysokości 2,5 metra.
Scena wywożenia zawartości Betty na pokład Aurigi w 100% została zrealizowana na zielonym tle.
Monstrualna maszyneria służąca do przewożenia obcych w rzeczywistości była miniaturą, mającą trochę ponad dziewięć metrów wysokości.
W ostatniej scenie - w zależności od wersji - Ripley i Call zachwycają się pięknem Ziemi z kosmosu (wersja pierwotna DVD) albo oczekują pojawienia się wojska w pobliżu ruin Paryża (widać zrujnowane miasto i szczątki Wieży Eiffla - wersja reżyserska na Blu-ray).
